VHF Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime & DSC

VHF-ROC(M) + DSC

The ROC license is a Canadian Federal government issued card that allows you to operate a marine VHF radio.

Learn how to communicate and handle emergency situations on a VHF marine radio.  This short course will cover all aspects of radio operation.  Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS).   By knowing how to call for help on the VHF radio, this course could save your life.  To operate a marine radio, it is required by law to have the Restricted Operator Certificate.  Examination takes place in 2 parts:  (a) 60 multiple choice questions and (b) 2 short oral questions.

PREREQUISITE: None

OPTIONS:

  • Evening (Zoom) Classroom Courses – 3 evenings.  Materials are provided ahead of time.  Course is taught over 2 evenings with the exam taking place on the 3rd evening.   Oral component done within the week on a separate time.  Exam is completed over Zoom and results will be mailed to you once marked.
  • Home Study – Material are sent out to you.  You study at your own pace.  When you are ready contact Advantage Boating to book a time/date to write your exam in person.  Exam can also be done online via Zoom on one of our pre-scheduled evenings: VHF Exam schedule link
  • Challenge – You are looking just to write the exam.  No course materials will be sent to you. Simply contact Advantage Boating to book a time/date to write your exam in Ottawa during our business hours.
