Want to sail in Europe – Get your ICC

International Yacht Training (IYT) is a global leader in marine certification.  Advantage Boating is an IYT partner school and offers two certifications issued by IYT:

What are these certifications?

International Certificate of Competency (ICC <24m Sail, <10m Power Coastal certification): The ICC is a certificate confirming that an individual is competent, for operating a pleasure craft, to the level required to meet the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Inland Water Committee (UN-ECE IWC) Resolution 40. This certification is one of the certifications required to charter a sailboat boat <24m or a powerboat <10m in coastal waters in many European and some Caribbean countries.

In accordance with UNECE Resolution 40, citizens and residents of countries that are signatories to Resolution 40 {LINK} will be obliged to obtain an ICC from their own national issuing authority and cannot be issued an IYT-ICC unless the applicant can provide proof of residency* in a country not on this list.

International Bareboat Skipper (Sail) certification (IBS):  This IYT standard is the equivalent certification to Sail Canada’s Intermediate Cruising Standard.  This certification provides you with the level of competence required when operating vessels:

1. Up to 24 metres
2. In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
3. During daylight hours, in fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions.

These certifications are not meant for the novice boater  You must hold the Sail Canada Basic Cruising, Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Standard (or be registered in our Intermediate Cruising course), Basic Coastal Navigation, VHF-DSC Radio License and have logged a minimum of 200 nautical miles and 10 days at sea by the end of the course in order to obtain the ICC and International Bareboat Skipper Certificate of Competency.

A ‘day at sea’ is defined as a minimum of 8 hours underway, during which the candidate actively participates in vessel operations including helming, sail handling, navigation, and onboard procedures. (time spent sitting at anchor or tied to a slip does not count). Sea time may be accumulated as crew or skipper; however, candidates are expected to demonstrate progressively increasing responsibility, including significant time acting as skipper. The miles must be logged on a relevant vessel (a sailing yacht, over 9 meters / 30 feet).
